Finally I have manged to log on to this blog – I’m a volunteer at Victoria Baths and have taken on updating this blog. Hopefully I will now be able to keep it up to date.

Manchester’s Aspiring Architects

Last Sunday saw the younger generation take over Victoria Baths’ open day. Visitors flocked to the building to take part in a series of Family Design Workshops aimed at budding architects. The activities, organised by Chartered Architect Jane Leach, with support from Manchester Women’s Design Group, were designed to give children a taste of what architects do and why their role is important.

Aspiring Will Alsops took part in everything from tile-printing and stained glass making, as well as designing bespoke homes for their favourite cartoon characters. Meanwhile, the adults enjoyed the usual tours and Open Day goings-on, as well as contributing to an Emotion Map of the city created by Manchester Women’s Design Group.

The Family Design Workshops were part of Manchester Architecture and Design Festival 2010, which runs until 15th May.

Whodunnit at Victoria Baths?

On Friday 23rd April, a team of lawyers from New Charter Housing Trust Group turned super-sleuths to unravel a murder mystery that played out around the building. The guests were ably assisted by Detective Sherlock and his hapless assistant, Inspector Clueless, as well as medical expert Dr Pat Aulogie, and loyal butler Jeeves. Quick update – I’m delighted to see that since we visited them a couple of weeks ago, Gorton Visual Arts have started blogging about the development of their soon-to-be-exhibited Our ‘Ouse Project. It’ll be really interesting to follow their work process. Look out for GVA at Victoria Baths later this summer, too.
